ALFF Program - Circumstance (Closing Film)
Sunday, February 12 at 7:00pm
Dir. Maryam Keshavarz
France/USA/Iran, 2011, 106 minutes
A suspenseful tale of love and family upended by obsession and suspicion, Circumstance is also a provocative coming-of-age story that cracks open the hidden, underground world of Iranian youth culture, where a young woman’s most electrifying passions can become the most dangerous of secrets.
Writer-director Maryam Keshavarz won a 2011 Sundance Audience Award for her Beirut-shot, U.S.-produced first feature, which examines female repression in an Islamic culture from the inside out. The story of teenage rebellion and young love in conflict with a homophobic society is based on Keshavarz’ own experiences growing up, and the young filmmaker shows a steady hand, and willingness to experiment.” - VIFF
