Blackfly (Dir. Christopher Hinton, Canada, 1991, 5 min): This animated film about the pesky blackfly in Northern Ontario is based on the song of the same title, written and sung by Canadian folk singer Wade Hemsworth, with the McGarrigle sisters.
The Fox and the Chickadee (Dir. Evan DeRushie, Canada, 2012, 8 min): Told in the style of Aesop’s original fables, this animation mixes classic puppet animation and layered paper cutouts. It’s a clever battle of wits between two wild animals that asks the question: Can either of them be trusted when their lives are at stake?
Me and My Moulton (Dir. Torill Cove, Nor/Can, 2014, 15 min): A seven-year-old girl whose parents are hopelessly unconventional modern architects envies other normal Norwegian families of the sixties. There is unexpected drama the summer she and her sisters ask her parents for a bicycle.
Islet (Dir. Nicolas Brault, Quebec, 2003, 7 min): Combining figurative abstraction with magic realism, this animated short depicts a world in which whales fall out of the sky and fish turn into balloons. With bold lines reminiscent of the stark simplicity of Inuit art, this cautionary tale is a reminder of the interconnectedness of all things.
Anash:Into the Valley of Frost (Dir. Carol Geddes, Yukon, 2008, 22 min): Teslin filmmaker Carol Geddes presents an episode from her award-winning animated live-action series about Anash, a young man who tries to re-unite all parts of the Sun-Rock in order to fulfil a prophecy to attain peace and protect a fragile land. The series takes place in the early 1800s on the archipelago of islands and inlets that make up the northwest coast of Canada. In Tlingit and English. Director in attendance.
