Who hasn’t felt apprehensive at the thought of starting high school? Nightmare at School, Hothouse 7: The Big Swing are shorts in a program that includes the strange yet engaging world of Rose & Violet, where the filmmakers employ a clever combination of 2D and digital cut-outs and clay animation in their exploration of the circus realm.

Nightmare at School
Who hasn’t felt apprehensive at the thought of starting high school? Playing on imagination and humour, this short film offers viewers a thought-provoking piece dealing with the transition that young people between the ages of 10 and 13 experience. Inspired by the work of Escher and Magritte, Catherine Arcand has created a graphically rich film through optical illusions and trompe-l’oeil effects. Her style aptly illustrates the theme of perceptions and is perfectly suited to conveying the dream world into which the film takes us. A film without words. Catherine Arcand, 2007, 9 min

The Big Swing
The macabre tale of a child trying to overcome her fear of the swing. Paula Gillgannon, 2011, 2 min

Rose & Violet
The animated short film Rose & Violet tells the story of two Conjoined twin sisters who are recruited as star acrobats in the world’s biggest circus. They seem bound for glory, but when a new strongman joins the troupe, a conflict turns tragic… Filmmakers Luc Otter and Claude Grosch employ a clever combination of 2D and digital cut-outs and clay animation in their exploration of the circus realm. Claude Grosch & Luc Otter, 2011, 26 min
