Seed: The Untold Story

This screening took place on
Sunday, October 16, 2016 at 5:00pm
Yukon Arts Centre

Equal parts fascinating, horrifying, inspiring and infuriating, this brilliantly directed documentary uses animation, verité footage and traditional interviews to tell the story of human-kind’s history of cultivating, storing and breeding plant seeds, through to the modern practices of industrialization, patenting and commodifying seeds, practices that puts our species’ survival at risk.

In the last century, 94% of our seed varieties have disappeared. SEED: The Untold Story follows passionate seed keepers protecting our 12,000 year-old food legacy. As biotech chemical companies control the majority of our seeds, farmers, scientists, lawyers, and indigenous seed keepers fight a David and Goliath battle to defend the future of our food. In a harrowing and heartening story, these reluctant heroes rekindle a lost connection to our most treasured resource and revive a culture connected to seeds.

Taggart Siegel and Jon Betz’s previous films include the theatrically released, multi-award winning documentaries, Real Dirt on Farmer John (IDFA, Al Gore “Reel Current” Award recipient, Independent Lens) and Queen of the Sun: What are the Bees Telling Us? (IDFA, New York Times Critic’s Pick).

“Chronicles the disappearance of something that’s absolutely elemental to human existence…Portland filmmakers Jon Betz and Taggart Siegel deliver a wake-up call.“ The Georgia Straight
