The Grubstake Remix
This screening took place on
Friday, July 8, 2016 at 8:00pm
Globe Theatre Atlin, BC
Canadian silent cinema ‘bad ass’ pioneer Nell Shipman meets Shakespeare in the Klondike. An off beat and delightful genre-busting hybrid that straddles worlds of theatre and silent film in a modern interpretation of The Grub-Stake, the 1923“northwoods melodrama” produced by and starring Canadian cinema icon Nell Shipman. Actors and musicians perform in concert with the silent _lm in a redux where the on-screen characters speak in Shakespearean English and French.
A young woman (played on screen by Nell Shipman and invoice by Sarah Moore) goes north to the Yukon to seek her fortune only to be deceived and manipulated in a world dominated by men. Faith
escapes into the bush with a team of sled dogs, her ailing father, and a half-witted prospector to lead a battle against her wrongful suitor and his henchmen.
The film features a new music score composed by Whitehorse- based director/composer Daniel Janke, with an ensemble that includes Vancouver musicians Peggy Lee (cello) and Jesse Zubot (violin) and Atlin AMF .
