The Wooden Sky with guests Old Cabin
This event took place on Friday, February 6, 2015 at 8:00pm
Yukon Arts Centre
Performing the Available Light Film Festival 2015 kick-off concert, Toronto’s The Wooden Sky will bring their freewheeling brand of roots rock to the Territory. This will be the first Yukon appearance for TWS, who will be playing songs from their 4th LP ‘Let’s Be Ready.’
“Let’s Be Ready channels Americana, the lilt of country and the patient dignity of the National, and it nods at the Hip - the latter thanks partly to Gardiner’s undulating, twang-inflected vocals.” - Now Magazine
Opening this kick-off concert will be Whitehorse’s own Old Cabin who will play a rare full 5-piece band performance.
About The Wooden Sky
Since the release of The Wooden Sky’s last LP in 2012, Every Child a Daughter, Every Moon a Sun, the intervening world has grabbed hold of the band, twisting and shaping the production of what will be their fourth album: Let’s Be Ready. Navigating the strife and uncertainty of evolving friendships, lost loves, death and the ever-shifting challenges of the music industry, Gavin Gardiner (vocals/guitar), Andrew Kekewich (drums) and Simon Walker (multi-instrumentalist) found themselves in a new place: holed up in Toronto’s west-end Gardiner’s garage-turned-studio to be exact. With the help of familiar collaborators Edwin Huizinga (violin) and Andrew Wyatt (bass and vocals), the band spent grueling hours together digging deeper into their sound, looking both for answers to their doubts, and a way to quiet them. The results, you could say, are loud. Thanks to a devoted and ever-growing international fan base, (the result of a strong history of touring-success in Canada and abroad), and with a string of awards and nominations under the belt (including a 2012 Juno nod), the band is set to leave any remaining doubts behind. Letting their hair grow long and armed with perhaps their most confident record to date The Wooden Sky is poised to cross the world reaching new heights on the back of it’s latest album, Let’s Be Ready. TWS is Gavin Gardiner (vocals, guitars, harmonica), Andrew Wyatt (bass, vocals), Simon Walker (piano, vocals, guitar) and Andrew Kekewich (percussion).
About Old Cabin
Opening the concert will be a rare Whitehorse appearance of Old Cabin in it’s 5-piece configuration: Jona Barr, Fiona Solon, Jordy Walker, Micah Smith and Johnnie Rodgers. Old Cabin’s self-titled LP is a testament to Barr’s up-and-comer status within the Canadian music scene and his acumen for writing textured and catchy roots-pop songs. If you caught their shows at Northern festivals in the last 2 years you’ll know what how special it is to experience a fully complimented Old Cabin.
