Hot Docs Industry Conference: A Primer for filmmakers

Yukon Film Society and Hot Docs are pleased to announce that Stephanie McArthur, Manager of Industry Programs at Hot Docs, will be in Whitehorse for two days of workshops and talks to help you get your documentary and factual projects ready for further development at the ALFF 2017 Industry conference (Feb 4 to 10, 2017) and the Hot Docs Industry Conference (May 2017).

Hot Docs Industry Conference: A Primer: Have you wanted to attend Hot Docs but need more insight on how to get the most out of it? presents how film festivals play an important role in the life cycle of documentary films. From development through distribution film festivals can offer support, connections and funding to get your films made. With a focus on understanding your audience and the marketplace this talk will show filmmakers of all levels how some early planning and research can get your film project off on the right foot. Tips will include building your festival strategy, successful pitching, and how to keep the momentum going post-pitch.

Learning from Documentary Audiences: In the second module, Hot Docs performed a major study of Canadian documentary audiences and Stephanie will present Learning from Documentary Audiences research with key insights for the filmmakers to understand documentary customer segments, their behaviors and how to use this information to bring films to audiences.


Bio
Stephanie has been managing Hot Docs industry programs including the renowned Hot Docs Forum - a 2 day pitch event since 2008. She also manages the Hot Docs-Blue Ice Group Documentary Fund for African filmmakers, Hot Docs own crowd-funding initiative Doc Ignite and the festival’s International Delegation and International Co-Production programs. Stephanie has been working in theatre and film for over a decade. Notable festivals include: Sundance Film Festival (Utah), Toronto International Film Festival, Toronto Fringe Festival, Miami International Film Festival (Florida), and the Provincetown Film Festival (Massachusetts), World Congress of Science and Factual Producers (Toronto, Manchester, Dresden, Paris, Washington). Previously she worked in Singapore as Associate Producer of the Asia Factual Forum (2007); was Head of Programming for the inaugural DocFest Stratford (2008); and served a four year term on the Toronto Fringe Festival ‘Best of the Fest’ Jury beginning in 2007.
