On-Location Sound Recording

Our first installment of the Sound Workshop Series begins this month with On-Location Sound Recording with Production Recordist David Hechenberger. High quality sound design and recording is one of the most cost-effective means of enhancing the overall production values of any film or digital media project. This workshop has been designed for intermediate level filmmakers who want to develop their skills and knowledge to achieve professional quality location sound recording. Particular focus will be paid to recording with equipment available through YFS.
Specific elements of on-location sound that is to be covered will include:
Properties of real-world Sound
Pre-production audio considerations & sound design basics
Techniques for capturing high quality sound with basic tools and a small crew
Overview of production sound equipment
How and When to use lavalier vs. directional microphones
Recording to external sound devices vs. recording directly to internal camera equipment
Organizing audio workflow from production to post-production
Intro to post-production sound
David Hechenberger is a Production Sound Recordist for film, television and multi-media. Hechenberger completed an Associate of the Arts Diploma in Applied Communications from Camosun College in 1995 and has since worked on dozens of award-winning documentaries and feature films. His recent credits include the hit-HGTV show Timber Kings, and W Network’s Property Brothers. Hechenberger lives in Vancouver area but often works abroad.
