Smoke Sauna Sisterhood

This screening took place on Monday, February 12, 2024 at 6:00 pmYukon Theatre

Within the sheltered confines of a traditional smoke sauna deep within an Estonian forest, groups of women gather to cleanse themselves in both body and soul.

The darkness of a smoke sauna becomes an intimate space for female togetherness, giving the women room not just to indulge in traditional sauna-based rituals (included on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list) but also to share their innermost secrets and intimate experiences. Washing off the shame trapped in their bodies and regaining their strength through a sense of communion,  a hotbox becomes a place of healing.
