The Monk and the Gun

This screening took place on Sunday, February 18, 2024 at 3:00 pmYukon Arts Centre

The Monk and the Gun is an entertaining tale about the conflict between tradition and progress and a gentle ensemble drama interwoven with an entertaining comedy of manners and socio-political commentary. The film not only tells a great story with its cast of colourful characters, but speaks to the warmth at the heart of the country itself.

The film captures wonder and disruption as Bhutan becomes one of the world's youngest democracies. Known throughout the world for its extraordinary beauty and its emphasis on Gross National Happiness, the remote Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan was the last nation to connect to the internet and television. After the King announced that he would cede his power to the people through their vote–thereby creating a new democratic form of government– a monk sets off on a mysterious quest for his master, while an American collector arrives in a small town searching for a rare, valuable artifact.

Director Pawo Choyning Dorji’s debut film, Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom was the first Oscar-nominated Bhutanese film.
