This lecture style course will help demystify the process for a more professional sound design and mix for films. A good sound mix is a multi-stage process and requires four distinct elements. This workshop will help filmmakers plan to capture the elements of sound they’ll need for post and understand the process of editing sound so it can delivered to a post audio designer and mixer.

For filmmakers already experienced with basic sound editing, it will help them elevate their approach to the sound editing and mixing they do themselves but also understand that a professional sound designer and mixer will bring an expertise and efficiency that requires years of training and experience. This introductory class is a must for filmmakers and producers who want to familiarize themselves with the post-production sound process.

Instructor bio: Matthew Lien is a creator of music inspired by life on Earth and carefully crafted from composition to arrangement, to production, to performance. With a passion for field recording and post production audio, Matthew often embarks on expeditions into extreme wilderness from the arctic to the tropics capturing sounds of nature — migrating birds and birds of prey, calving glaciers and rolling icebergs, chirping picas and arctic caribou, dolphins, whales and deep-sea volcanoes — which are woven into his music, inspiring environmental appreciation. Matthew’s twelve solo albums, an album with the Yukon’s Wildlands ensemble, two live concert DVDs (including one with the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan), numerous soundtracks, commissioned works and documentaries all retain an emphasis on culture and the environment. Matthew has been focused on audio editing and mixing for film post production sound over the past three years. Recent credits include documentaries Tlatsini by Mike Rudyk screening soon on CBC GEM and Pandemic at the End of the World directed by Allan Code in co-production with the NFB, as well several binaural commercial short films for Yukon Brewing.
