DANCE ME OUTSIDE examines the tension between Indigenous people and settlers in Canada from an Indigenous perspective. Based on a book by W.P. Kinsella, the film is set on the Kidabanesee reserve in Northern Ontario. Silas Crow is a young man confused about his direction in life; he wants to take an automobile mechanic’s course in college, but is uncertain whether he should apply. Events are set in motion when a young girl from the reserve is murdered by a white man who gets off with a light sentence, prompting the community to demand vengeance…
Bruce McDonald (
Highway 61, Roadkill, Weirdos) adapted Kinsella's short story with Don McKellar and John Frizell and directed many young Indigenous actors in their first major film roles. Jennifer Podemski, Ryan Black, Adam Beach, Tamara Podemski and Michael Greyeyes turned in excellent performances and made this film their own - four years before
Smoke Signals heralded the rise of Indigenous fiction filmmaking.
Winner of two Genie Awards.
