Indigenous Short Films explores traditions and cultures from around the world. We start off in Alberta Canada and end in Norway with Australia and Hawaii in between. Lake by Alexandra Lazarowich starts us off with the beginnings of filmmaking with 16mm cinema verité style. Then Elders by Tony Briggs takes us to Australia and shows how their tribe tests the knowledge of their youth. Now is the Time by Christopher Auchter goes back to old footage of a celebration of raising a totem pole on Haida Gwaii. What If by Daniel King talks about what if they signed a treaty way back when the settlers first came to their land. Alika Maikau's film Moloka'i Bound raises awareness of the importance of fatherhood. Tristin Greyeyes' film Tawaw? is a humourous look at racism and Elle Sofe Sara's film Ribadit (Pulling in the Belt) is a good look at tradition of finding your mate.

Cree director Alexandra Lazarowich riffs off classic verité cinema to craft a  contemporary portrait of Métis women net fishing in Northern Alberta.

Two Elders feel that their grandson is old enough to start learning vitally important lessons that will equip him with the necessary tools to maintain the future survival of his culture. His classroom is the expansive country of his ancestors. But is he ready for the challenge that is placed before him, and will he know what to do when the time comes?

Now is the Time Christopher Auchter (Haida), 2019, BC, 16 min

When internationally renowned Haida carver Robert Davidson was only 22 years old, he was instrumental in changing the history of his people forever. With help from his grandparents, his father, and his younger brother Reg, Davidson committed to carving the first new totem pole in Old Massett in almost a century.

What If Daniel King (Indigenous Australian), 2019, AUS, 8 min

Floating in a timeless space 5 Victorian community members contemplate what if a treaty was signed in 1788? Differences aside there is common unity.

Moloka'I Bound Alika Maikau (Hawaiian), 2019, USA, 9 min

A wayward young man, recently released from prison, struggles to reconnect with his son and Hawaiian heritage.

Tawaw? Tristin Greyeyes (Muskeg Lake Cree Nation), SK, 3 min

A young Indigenous couple moves into their new house. While unpacking, the nosey neighbourhood welcoming committee pops by with friendly chit-chat and food with a side of racism.

Ribadit (Pulling in the Belt) Elle Sofe Sara (Sami), 2019, NOR, 10 min

Ribadit/ Pulling in the belt was a tradition in Sápmi. In this film we meet two elders who orchestrate this ancient tradition to life with energetic young people and dancers.
