“Give me the child until he is seven and I will give you the man.” Beginning in 1964 with Seven UP, The ‘UP Series’ has explored this Jesuit maxim. The original concept was a series of interviews with 14 British children from diverse backgrounds, that asked them about their lives and their dreams for the future. Every seven years, director Michael Apted returns to talk to them and examine the progression of their lives. Ranging from cab driver Tony to schoolmates Jackie, Lynn and Susan to heart-breaking Neil, as they turn 56 to face and reveal more life-changing decisions and surprising developments. An extraordinary look at the structure of life in the 20th century, The ‘UP Series’ is what to Roger Ebert called, “an inspired, almost noble use of the film medium. Apted penetrates to the central mystery of life.” “More than ever in this seventh edition, the UP people seem to be fulfilling Henry David Thoreau’s observation that “most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them.” –Peter Howell, Toronto Star
