Employing chutzpah and community to make her micro-budget kid-friendly sci-fi feature, Yellowknife director Jen Walden's Elijah and the Rock Creature charms with warmth and creative special effects. A grieving boy and his mother embark on a trip to see the stars at the largest dark sky preserve in the world. Unable to contain his excitement, 10-year-old Elijah wanders away from his mother and loses his way in the vast wilderness of Wood Buffalo National Park. As he struggles to find his way back, Elijah encounters an extraordinary creature in a similar circumstance. The unlikely pair forms a bond and together learns that sometimes following your heart is the best way to find your way home. Writer/director, Jen Walden and producer/editor, Jeremy Emerson, in attendance. Screens with: Birch Song DIR. KEITH ROBERTSON, 2018, NWT, 17 MIN Making birch syrup is a labour-intensive process, it is ultimately not profitable, and the black, bitter syrup does not taste as sweet as its more glamorous sister, maple syrup. So why do three Yellowknife families head into the bush for two weeks to make it every year?
