John Southworth and The South Seas + We Are the City

This event took place on Thursday, February 12, 2015 at 8:00pm

ALFF presents live music and cinema with Toronto’s John Southworth with his band The South Seas, performing songs from the new double-LP Niagara to accompanying video. Niagara Falls is a nexus of culture, commerce, (uncomfortable) history and geography - a place where Canada and the United States intersect in gaudy tourist attractions, flashing lights and gambling, all gathered around one of the natural wonders of the world. Those many clashes and intersections make it rich territory for a double-album length exploration, so it's no surprise that's where Toronto-via-U.K. singer/songwriter John Southworth set Niagara. Split into two records, a Canadian side an an American side, it threads his jazzy, elegant folk-pop (featuring an all-star band that includes Thom Gill, Justin Haynes, Jean Martin, Andrew Downing, Craig Harley and Felicity Williams) through a thorough survey of every drop of falling water and all the mythology that surrounds it. - "Toronto's best kept secret." - Mojo magazine Closing the evening will be Vancouver’s We Are the City, the artists behind the original soundtrack of Violent (award-winning Norway-shot micro-feature also screening at ALFF 2015). The band's drummer Andrew Huculiak is the director of the film, which was co-written by band-mate Cayne McKenzie. We Are the City creates their own brand of pop music. The band’s sophomore release, Violent, is a sonic roller coaster filled with ups and downs, louds and quiets. The title’s implications are both positive and negative, straddling the line between the beautiful and the abrasive and encompassing the full scope of We Are the City’s musical maximalism. Violent has garnered positive reviews from Vancouver Sun, Georgia Straight, Exclaim!, and many more as well as premieres on Noisey, Huffington Post, MuchMusic, Chart Attack and CBC.
