The 16mm Film Programme: Begone Dull Care In this extraordinary short animation, Evelyn Lambart and Norman McLaren painted colours, shapes, and transformations directly on to their filmstrip. The result is a vivid interpretation, in fluid lines and colour, of jazz music played by the Oscar Peterson Trio. Dir. Evelyn Lambart & Norman McLaren, 1949, 8 min 21-87 A wry commentary on machine-dominated man, the man to whom nothing matters, who waits for chance to call his number. The film is a succession of many unrelated views of the passing crowd. Dir. Authur Lipsett, 1964, 10 min Circle of the Sun At the 1956 gathering of the Blood Indians of Alberta, the exciting spectacle of the Sun Dance was captured on film for the first time. The film examines Blood Indian culture and spirituality, showing how the theme of the circle reflects their connection to wildlife, and addresses the predicament of the young generation--those who have relinquished their ties with their own culture but have not yet found a firm place in a changing world. Dir. Colin Low, 1960, 30 min Octopus Hunt A voyage down to the green depths of the Pacific Ocean, into the mysterious domain of the deep-sea diver and the marine creatures that are his quarry. The film is about a zoological expedition to capture octopus and wolf eel specimens for the Vancouver aquarium. The underwater action is described by the divers themselves. Dir Bernard Devlin, 1965, 17 min
