Community-Based Filmmaking: In Conversation with Jonathan Frantz

One Day in the Life of Noah Piugattuk and Edge of the Knife were both produced in Indigenous communities using traditional language, local actors and strong input from community members.  Producer, Jonathan Frantz sits down with Tlingit performer and producer Melaina Sheldon to discuss the ins and outs of community-based filmmaking. As producer of Edge of the Knife (ALFF 2019) Frantz worked intimately with the Haida community to create a narrative film entirely in Haida, an endangered language with less than 20 fluent speakers. In this informal conversation, Frantz talks about this and his experiences producing One Day in the Life of Noah Piugattuk (ALFF 2020) which is based on a real-life event that happened in director Zach Kunuk's home community of Kapuivik, NU.
