Screenwriting Workshop Intensive

November 25 and 26, 2023 10:00-5:00pm, $200 for YFS Production members and $250 for non-members. Reduced fee available by request. Travel support available for artists traveling more than 100 kms to attend the workshop.

In this two day intensive course, Daniel Janke (How People Got Fire, Northern Town TV series, The Grubstake Remix) will facilitate participants in developing screenwriting skills for fiction and documentary film. The workshop will be structured around issues discussed in the Robert McKee book Story  (Regan, 1997), and will include discussion about writing for visual media, story structure, scene breakdown, log-line, theme, message, and pitching. The workshop is geared towards emerging and mid-career filmmakers looking to develop their writing (fiction and documentary), and is intended to inspire us to write more. Daniel Janke is a Canadian composer, jazz pianist, and media artist.  He was born in Edmonton, Alberta, and grew up in Ontario, Canada. Daniel currently divides his time between his studio in Yukon, Canada, and in Berlin, Germany.

Daniel’s most recent recording release is titled Body In Motion on the Centrediscs label. He also performs and records with his group Winter Trio, and is artistic director of the community-based Problematic Orchestra. Daniel works regularly with violinist Mark Fewer, and with clarinetist François Houle. Listen to an interview on the release of his album Cinco Puntos Cardinales.

Daniel’s work as a composer has gradually drawn him in to different roles as a writer and filmmaker. He was a co-writer and conceived the CBC comedy series Northern Town (6 x 30 mins) set and shot in the Yukon in 2008 which starred Luke Kirby, Tracy Wright, Nathaniel Arcand and David Fox. His most recent film is Homecoming Song.  His multi-media stage production The Grubstake Remix toured Canada, and recently presented at the Babylon Theatre in Berlin, Germany.  Daniels short film How People Got Fire [NFB, 2009] received numerous awards, and has screened internationally.

Daniel is currently working on a new collection of art songs with soprano Rachel Fenlon. He is also working on the new feature film script Woman With A Fish, with Massey Productions.
