Firecrackers

This screening took place on Monday, February 4, 2019 at 8:30 pmYukon Arts Centre

Selected one of Canada’s Top Ten 10 films of 2018. Preceded by a music set with Paris Pick at 8:10 PM. Paris is presented with support from Music Yukon Lou and her best friend Chantal plan to get out of their isolated, run-down town and move to a city far, far away. When Chantal’s unstable and possessive ex violates her during a night of partying, the girls decide to exact their revenge on him through a night of vandalism and debauchery. The consequences of their actions are devastating, threatening the girls’ chances of ever leaving. The more Lou fights tooth-and-nail to save her friendship and hold onto her dreams, the more she spins out of control as she begins to realize that freedom will come at a high cost. Content warning for language and sexuality. "This highly anticipated feature debut from Jasmin Mozaffari marks the bold arrival of a vital new voice. In the same vernacular as social-realist auteurs Andrea Arnold (American Honey) and Lynne Ramsay (You Were Never Really Here), Mozaffari's searing drama brims with explosive intensity. Driven by audacious lead performances from Michaela Kurimsky and Karena Evans and made by an almost entirely female key crew, the skilfully tenacious Firecrackers is a remarkable testament to what female-driven narratives can be." - DANIS GOULET, TIFF
