Ghosts of the Joe Henry The Dempster (Joe Henry) Highway is the only road in Canada that crosses the Arctic Circle. It is the meeting of a man made entity and some of the most desolate landscape on the planet. Locally, it is often referred to as “The Joe Henry” in honour of aboriginal Joe Henry, who was instrumental in its construction as the highway passes through the traditional lands of the Hwëch’in peoples. A film without words, Ghosts of the Joe Henry is an assemblage of sensations of the land, the people, flora and fauna that have inhabited the lands that the highway traverses. This documentary was commissioned by the Yukon Film Society to celebrate our 30th Anniversary. Dan Sokolowski, 2015, 20 min Chasms of Silence Chasms of Silence chronicles a quiet walk across the arctic circle on Canada's Baffin Island. Made specifically in stereo 3D for a sense of presence in place, the film takes us into the space and silence of this elemental landscape. Woven into the land are the voices of Jennifer Berezan and Tanya Tagaq Gillis, and the words it has inspired in poet and novelist Anne Michaels, as she contemplates life, death, time, and eternity. The 2D version of this film will be presented. Marten Berkman, 2014, 12 min Share the Road This project is a documentary about the new relationship between cyclists and car drivers who share the road during winter in Whitehorse. Winter cycling has gained a lot of popularity in recent years which has led to many frustrations amongst winter commuters. The documentary serves as a tribune for all parties to share their feelings and ideas, with the final goal of improving winter commuting in Whitehorse. In French and English with English subtitles.
