Apocalyptic visions can take many forms. From atomic to cosmic disaster. Cautionary tale to sardonic despair; comets, asteroids, and plague. Rarely does this genre focus on the area between those extremes, as it does brilliantly in Last Night, a wry tale exploring the effects of the world’s imminent demise via a group of characters in Toronto. Don McKellar directs and stars as Patrick who endures a faux Christmas celebration with his family. Sandra (Sandra Oh) tries to get across town to commit suicide with her husband, a gas company employee, Duncan (David Cronenberg) who is dutifully calling customers to ensure them that the gas will remain on until the end. Meanwhile, Craig (Callum Keith Rennie) hopes to achieve sexual satisfaction with several women on his list. Patrick plans his last moments alone, until he and Sandra crosspaths. Winner of awards at Cannes, VIFF, TIFF and 3 Genies.
