In the summer of 2022, a miner struck more than gold outside Dawson City, in Canada’s Yukon. A fully preserved infant woolly mammoth that died 36,000 years ago protruded from the Arctic permafrost, her flesh still pink and green grass in her belly. The creature’s discovery reignited interest in a species that has long inspired scientific curiosity. Mammoth Hunters takes us on a journey back through time, as we piece together the puzzle of these ancient and mysterious animals: how they lived and died and the deeper meaning of their existence. Through the perspectives of five mammoth lovers –– scientists, artists and citizen detectives –– each obsessively drawn to the mammoth’s enigma, we embark on a thrilling quest for knowledge and a meditation on the bonds that link humanity to these Ice Age giants.
Blending ecology, humanism and spirituality, the film reveals the beauty in that which eludes us and unfurls a deeper truth: Mammoths collapse our sense of time. Though they went extinct thousands of years ago, these creatures roamed the frozen plains with our ancestors. As we join each seeker in their excavation of this primordial bond, we connect with a past and present that help us better understand ourselves.
