Both personal fantasy and mythic construction of the history of the people and places of Canada’s coldest city, Maddin’s signature visual silent film flair and idiosyncratic narration anchors this surreal and hilarious personal documentary. Maddin, who once worked in a Winnipeg archive to support his early film endeavours, appears to understand that a history which proclaims itself as anything but part fantasy is absurd.
