"'You know how to whistle, don’t you, Steve? You just put your lips together and… blow.'
That’s a famous line from the Bogie/Bacall film classic To Have and Have Not. One that wouldn’t be out of place in Brent Butt’s new movie No Clue, a comedic homage to film noir with Butt as a bumbler who pretends to be a hard-boiled detective so that Amy Smart’s blonde bombshell will spend time with him.
Fans of CORNER GAS will recognize the gentle, self-deprecating humour as Brent stumbles from clue to clue in a script written by Butt himself. Amy Smart does a great job doing the Lauren Bacall thing playing straight gal to Brent’s fumbling detective.
There’s even a little bit of thriller style action as the complicated plot unfolds and it becomes clearer as to who is manipulating whom. Lots of laughs in a film that will appeal to lovers of old-style Hollywood hokum.
Director, Carl Bessai in attendance. Q&A facilitated by Globe and Mail film critic, Geoff Pevere.
