The Dark Fruits with Hendrika

This event took place on Friday, February 9, 2024 at 9:00 pmYukon Theatre

The is an all-ages licenced event. Tickets: $20 adults, $10 youth U18

The Dark Fruits are not your typical starry-eyed-youngster indie rock band.

They may be starry-eyed, but their experiences and perspectives bring a unique depth to their music. They are bound by a love for making music that is authentically northern with a quirky, universal appeal. Their chilled-out sound of their second full-length album, Warm Weather Starter Pack, was recorded with just three members – Tara Martin, the rhythmic heartbeat on drums and back-up vocals; Jordy Walker, the versatile maestro on guitars, bass, synth, and production; and emerging singer-songwriter, Jeff Wolosewich. This ALFF show will also include Yukon music-scene stalwarts Selina Heyligers-Hare on bass and Andrea McColeman on keyboards.

While their first album earned them a showcase opportunity at Breakout West 2019 and the Audience Choice Award at the Yukon Film Society/Music Yukon's 24-hour Music Video Challenge, their focus has evolved. Their new music delves into the themes of connection, separation, and the unique experiences of living in – and sometimes leaving - the northern wilderness. It's an album that speaks to anyone seeking meaning in an ever-changing world. Also featured at ALFF this year will be their music video for their single, “Florida”, which features archival 8mm footage from Yukon Archives that has sent a wave of nostalgia across the Yukon.

Hendrika

Selina Heyligers-Hare is a vocalist, guitarist, pianist, bassist and songwriter with a diploma in Music & Technology from Selkirk College. She is a member of bands such as Major Funk (two time WCMA nominees) , Paris Pick (FocusWales 2021, Keychange ) and the Naysayers (Coax Records).

Fresh off their Spring Tour through BC and Alberta, her band Hendrika is already gaining traction in Western Canada. They have been known to rock the stage with classic rock and blues while also showing their roots with soft, melodic folk harmonies. The effect Selina's voice has on the audience is one of awe and captivation. She has been called the next Ann Wilson,
or Aretha Franklin on many occasions due to the sheer power, dynamics and range that she possesses. Not only can she sing, but the stage is home, and she emanates a star quality while still being humble and kind in character. Seeing Hendrika live is a stunning experience not to be missed.
