The History of Sound

Monday, October 6 until Wednesday, October 8, 2025Yukon Theatre

From the director of the excellent Oscar-nominated Living;  starring Bill Nighy comes a beautiful LGBTQ2+ period film starring two of our favourite movie boyfriends (and finest actors of our generation): Paul Mescal and Josh O'Connor.

Two young music students, Lionel and David, attending the Boston Conservatory in 1917, bond over their shared love of folk music. They reconnect a few years later, embarking on a song collecting trip in the backwaters of Maine.

In English and Italian with EST.

Recommended ages 15+ for sexual scenes and mature themes.

The History of Sound might not set the internet on fire, but it will leave a few embers burning in the hearts of any audience who takes the time to listen to its particular song. - Bary Hertz, The Globe and Mail

[I]f you tap into The History of Sound’s soulful undercurrents, the soaring spiritual dimensions of the music — in songs more often about people than Divinity — and the depth of feeling in Mescal and O’Connor’s performances, this is a film of lingering melancholic beauty. The power of the music alone makes it one of the most unabashedly romantic LGBTQ films in recent memory. - David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter.
