It Started as a Concert. It Became a Celebration. Thanksgiving, 1976, San Francisco's Winterland: the Band performs its last concert after 16 years on the road. Some numbers they do alone, some songs include guest artists from Ronnie Hawkins to Bob Dylan to Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Muddy Waters. Scorsese's camera explores the interactions onstage in the making of music. Offstage, he interviews the Band's five members, focusing on the nature of life on the road. The friendships, the harmonies, the hijinks, and the wear and tear add up to a last waltz. Although he said he hated Martin Scorsese’s film of The Band’s valedictory show, there is no finer cinematic record of what made the late Levon Helm so great. Helm’s vocals on "Up on Crickle Creek", "The Weight", "Ophelia" and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" are highlights in a concert that seems to include nothing but show stoppers. This was the rock movie that set the bar for everyone else, and to see it again is to be reminded of an epochal era in American popular music.
