Starring Benjamin Bratt and based on the powerful, beat-influenced novel by Fort Smith, NT - raised story-teller, Richard Van Camp. Larry is a Tlicho Indian growing up in the small northern town of Fort Simmer. His tongue, hallucinations and fantasies are hotter than the centre of the sun. At sixteen, he loves heavy metal music, his Tlicho roots and Juliet Hope, the high school “hottie”. When Johnny, a Métis from Hay River, moves to town, Larry is ready for almost anything. Skinny as spaghetti, nervy and self-deprecating, Larry is an appealing mixture of bravado and vulnerability. His past holds many terrors: an abusive father, and an accident that almost killed him. The Lesser Blessed is an eye-opening depiction of what it is to be a young Aboriginal man in the modern world. Closing film of the 2012 ImagineNative Film and Media Arts Festival. Richard Van Camp is a proud member of the Dogrib (Tlicho) Dene from Fort Smith, NWT, and an internationally renowned storyteller and best-selling author. He is the author of the novel The Lesser Blessed, three collections of short stories, Angel Wing Splash Pattern, The Moon of Letting Go and Godless but Loyal to Heaven, as well as two children’s books with Cree artist, George Littlechild: A Man Called Raven and What’s the Most Beautiful Thing You Know About Horses? He also has written comic books for youth and three baby books. Richard lives in Edmonton. He is a telling stories throughout the Atlin AMF. Go see him.
