This celebration of American ‘Special-ness’ by former Talking Heads singer, David Byrne, is a movie musical in the guise of an ethnographic documentary as it examines the everyday lives of ordinary people in the fictional town of Virgil, Texas. After the breakout success of the Talking Heads concert ␣lm Stop Making Sense, Warner Brothers gave Byrne free reign to make this ␣lm, which he described as, “a project with songs based on true stories taken from tabloid newspapers. It’s like 60 Minutes on acid.” Featuring Pop Staples, Spalding Gray, Talking Heads as the house band and John Goodman in one his most memorable performances, True Stories remains wonderfully odd and full of postmodern whimsy, even 30 years on. “The most joyous and inventive rock movie-musical since The Beatles scrambled through Help.” –Time Magazine
