Sandra Hüller (also in the excellent Oscar-nominated film Anatomy of a Fall) plays Hedwig Höss, the mother of five and wife to Rudolph. The couple lives in an idyllic villa with a garden literally a stone’s throw from Rudolph’s place of work — he’s Camp Commandant at Auschwitz. Hedwig’s concerns are domestic, and most of the film takes place within the home. Dispassionately examining the ordinary existence of people complicit in horrific crimes, The Zone of Interest forces us to take a cold look at the mundanity behind an unforgivable brutality.
The film premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, winning both the Grand Prix and FIPRESCI Prize. It went on to be selected as one of the top-five international films of 2023 by the National Board of Review, and was chosen as the British entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards as well as nominated for three Golden Globes Awards, including Best Motion Picture.
In German and Polish with English subtitles.
