ALFF 2012 Audience Choice Award for Best Canadian Documentary
February 15, 2012
The newly christened ALFF Audience Choice award for Best Canadian Documentary went to Charles Wilkinson and his film Peace Out. The runner-up for the award was Joel Heath’s People of a Feather. The award was presented by Yukon filmmaker, Dennis Allen, on behalf of the festival and the award’s co-sponsor the National Film Board of Canada, before the final screening of the festival on Sunday night.
Other highlights of the festival included the presentation of the Oscar nominated film Monsieur Lazhar before the largest audience of the festival. The other top films for attendance at this year’s festival were People of a Feather, Circumstance, The Whistleblower, Peace Out, and The Grub-Stake Revisited. Total attendance at the festival was 4000 admissions, up 10% over admissions in 2011.
To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the festival, the Yukon Film Society commissioned Daniel Janke to direct a live performance screening of Nell Shipman’s 1923 film The Grub-Stake with live music and verse performed by 5 musicians and 6 actors. The resulting show The Grub-Stake Revisited was funny and breath-taking and surely the most highly praised event of the festival.
Thanks to all the festival attendees, sponsors, supporters, festival staff, the YAC staff, festival guests, performers, filmmakers, distributors, and volunteers for making this an incredibly memorable 10th anniversary.
