ALFF '25 Program Highlights – First Look

Universal Language (Une Langue Universelle)

Dir. Matthew Rankin

An absurdist triptych of seemingly unconnected stories finds a mysterious point of intersection in this tale set somewhere between Winnipeg and Tehran.

Negin and Nazgol find a sum of money frozen in the winter ice and try to get it out. Massoud leads a group of increasingly confused tourists through the monuments and historic sites of Winnipeg. Matthew quits his job at the Québec government and embarks upon a mysterious journey to visit his mother. Time, geography, and personal identities crossfade, interweave, and collide into a surreal comedy of disorientation.

Northlore

Dir. David Hamelin, Melaina Sheldon, World premiere

NORTHLORE is an animated and live-action documentary directed by David Hamelin and Melaina Sheldon featuring life-changing stories that weave a common thread shared by all Northerners: the belief that our connection to the natural world is a primal experience. These are stories about transformation and how nature can be the catalyst for the deep, spiritual awakening we all seek in our daily lives.

Co-produced with the NFB, Northlore will have its world premiere at ALFF '25.

Saturday

Dir. Jessica Hall, World premiere

Saturday is a delightful short-form, personal documentary about filmmaker Jessica Hall’s sister Katherine successfully navigating life with an intellectual disability, because of the support and guidance of her mother and best friend, Frances.

Are We Done Now?

Dir. Ben Immanuel, Canadian premiere

The third feature from Vancouver's Ben Immanuel (Down River, ALFF 2016) is a hopeful and beautiful ensemble indie comedy-drama starring Gabrielle Miller (Corner Gas) as a therapist who agrees, along with her diverse young clients, to participate in a (fictionalized) documentary exploring the impact of global crises on mental health. Set and shot during the early days of the COVID19 Pandemic, the participants gain unexpected self-insight, leading to a profound understanding of their identities and roles in our transformed world.

Paying for It

Dir. Sook-Yin Lee

When an introverted cartoonist's girlfriend wants to redefine their relationship, he begins sleeping with sex workers and discovers a new kind of intimacy in the process. An adaptation of the Graphic Novel by Chester Brown.

Fire Tower

Dir. Tova Krentzman

Amidst the Rocky Mountains' boreal forests, solitary watchtower staff act as guardians, their vigilance vital in detecting wildfires that increasingly endanger North America due to climate change. Fire Tower is a character-driven documentary with dramatic landscapes, intense conditions, and far-out stories — akin to astronauts and lighthouse keepers. Winner of Best Feature Documentary at the YKIFF!

Shepherds

Dir. Sophie Deraspe

A Montréal copywriter sets out to reinvent himself as a sheep herder in the French Alps despite knowing literally nothing about the centuries-old craft.

Swamp Dogg Gets His Pool Painted

Dir. Isaac Gale, Ryan Olson

Cult musician Swamp Dogg and housemates Moogstar and Guitar Shorty have turned their suburban LA home into an artistic haven. They journey through the turbulent music business, forming a special friendship transcending eras.

Bob Trevino Likes It

Dir. Tracie Laymon

A people-pleasing young woman (a career defining performance by Barbie Ferreira) is involuntarily estranged from her narcissistic father and unexpectedly befriends a childless man on the internet who has the same name as her father.
