The 11th annual Available Light Film Festival Industry Conference has continued a trend of building Yukon filmmakers' skills and developing projects through the ALFF industry conference.
This year boasted an uptick in participation with a 15% increase in attendance for workshops and presentation as compared to last year. Total admissions to the 20 workshops and industry events was 500 attendees, including 57 networking meetings that were arranged between local filmmakers and 12 attending industry decision-makers. With the partnership support of the Government of Yukon's Media Development unit, ALFF Industry sparked enthusiasm and momentum in an increasingly growing film and digital media industry.
This year's conference featured an acting and directing workshop with highly respected actor and director, Michael Greyeyes; a screenwriting workshop with Marie Clements whose film Red Snow opened ALFF 2020; a directing workshop with award-winning filmmaker Matthew Rankin; a documentary cinematography workshop with cinematography master, John Price; and up-close sessions with Crave TV, CBC Docs, CBC creator Network, NFB and APTN.
This year the conference featured five free workshops including sessions on how to distribute your film through Canadian online platform, VUCAVU; updates from the NFB; how to work with the CBC's Creator Network; and making local stories for global audiences via Hot Docs Doc Ignite program. The ever popular ALFF pitch event awarded two $5,000 cash and $5,000 in-kind prizes to local filmmakers, Brendan Preston and Emily Tredger. The Government of Yukon contributed to one prize and community broadcaster, Northwestel Community Television was a sponsor of the other cash prize. In-kind equipment and services will be provided by Northwestel Community Television, Yukon Film Society and Screen Production Yukon Association.
“It's incredible to see the energy and enthusiasm of the Yukon's film industry grow and take shape,” says Industry Conference Director, Vivian Belik. “The conference continues to be a tool to inspire northern creators and showcase local talent.”
The conference attracted 50+ participants from all parts of the territory as well as from Vancouver and Toronto.
ALFF Industry was supported by: Telefilm Canada, Canada Media Fund, and Northwestel Community Television. ALFF Industry sponsors included: Air North – Yukon’s Airline, Super Channel, Best Western Gold Rush Inn and Driving Force.
