February 1, 2019

Available Light Film Festival: Highlights for the 10th Annual ALFF Industry conference For release February 1, 2019, Whitehorse, Yukon Today marks the start of the Available Light Film Festival’s 10th annual ALFF Industry conference, five days of exceptional programming that brings together industry professionals and decision-makers with seasoned and emerging filmmakers, as well as those interested or new to filmmaking, for panels, workshops, and more, including events free and open to the public. ALFF Industry is presented by the Yukon Film Society in partnership with Yukon Media Development, the Department of Economic Development, Yukon Government. The conference, which runs Feb. 1 to 5, features several free workshops to the public including a session on CAVCO production tax credits organized by Screen Production Yukon Association, Canada Council For the Arts funding for artists and grant-writing for emerging filmmakers presented by Industry Programs staff at Hot Docs International Documentary Film Festival Toronto. This year the festival is excited to welcome Robin Mirsky, Executive Director of the Rogers Group of Funds and Suzanne Lacey, Program Manager at Bell Fund. It's the first time the festival has hosted a representative from Rogers Group of Funds and many years since a representative from Bell Fund has attended. The presence of these two private funders, who distribute millions of dollars in production funding to the Canadian film and television industry each year, gives northern filmmakers a tremendous opportunity to develop and finance their film, television and digital media projects. As well, the festival is pleased to feature a narrative filmmaking workshop with Jasmin Mozaffari. Her film, Firecrackers, which plays Feb 5 at ALFF 2019, was named one of Canada’s Top 10 films of 2018. The young and talented filmmaker (originally from Barrie, Ontario) gives a session on the making of her first feature film made entirely on a microbudget. This year’s festival programming kicks off February 2nd with a much-anticipated keynote speech by dynamic speaker and author Richard Van Camp on the importance of storytelling for community healing. The film Three Feathers, based on his graphic novel of the same name, screens following the keynote speech at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre and is free to the public. In addition to the Industry Conference’s ever-popular one-on-one meetings for filmmaker-industry relationship-building, spotlight sessions will feature CBC documentary Channel and Knowledge Network in addition to a funder's panel on Monday February 4th, which includes representatives from Rogers Group of Funds, Bell Fund, Telefilm Canada and Canada Media Fund.   The ALFF Pitch Event, in which filmmaking teams go head to head in front of a live audience and a panel of judges for a chance to win $5,000 in financing and production support for their projects, will take place Sunday Feb. 3, at 1:00pm at the Old Fire Hall. “We’re looking forward to thought-provoking discussions and dialogue at this year's ALFF Industry,” says Industry Producer Vivian Belik. “It's exciting to see the Yukon filmmaking community grow and for ALFF Industry to play a role in creating those connections between Yukon filmmakers and filmmakers, funders and broadcasters from across the country!” Tickets for individual sessions are $25 ($20 if you’re a YFS production member). Or a full industry pass ($175/ $150 YFS production member) gets you access to all workshops and networking receptions. Tickets and passes are available at the Industry conference venues: Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre (Feb 1 and 2) and Old Fire Hall (Feb 3 - 5).
